Spotlight on a new Stud & Equestrian facility in Balnagowan, Mackay

In little over a year since arriving in Australia, Chrystle and Joao (aka John) Campeao have established a growing top quality equestrian facility in Balnagowan, called Champion C Stud.

Let's face it, relocating to a new country requires a huge amount of energy on it's own without the additional task of setting up a comprehensive equestrian business & facility providing full care agistment & spelling, riding lessons, and a breeding programme plus breaking & training, all of this requires knowledge, experience and a whole heap of energy.

We believe that Chrystle & Johns' efforts will be welcomed in the area, as it is clear that they do have a high level of passion and commitment.

Read on as Chrystle explains exactly what's happening at Champion C Stud & Equestrian Centre.

We have 90 acres here at The Meadows. We offer Spelling for race horses, agistment, riding lessons, breaking in, training of horses and breeding. We also have schooled horses for sale and we offer Equissage for horses.

We offer all our clients, individual paddocks with good shelters and hopefully peace of mind. All the shelters have rubber around the bottom, colour bond around the top and insulated roofs for the hot climate. We have a 20m sand round yard and a 20x40m, fenced sand arena. We supply and are in charge of all feeding at the centre, we clean and maintain paddocks and check and clean waters daily.

Currently we have 47 horses on the farm. Between ourselves and our business partner, Mr Andrew McDonald we have 20 thoroughbred broodmares, 10 of which are in foal this year and should start foaling in August 2011. The other 10 mares will be going into foal this season. All of our mares are bred for racing and we hope that some of our foals will be sold at the yearling sales and some kept to race. We are lucky enough to have met a fantastic trainer here in Mackay, Mr John Manzelmann who we do a lot of work with and who will hopefully start some of our young horses when the time comes. We have already broken in a few horses that should have their first starts in the near future.

My husband, Joao Campeao aka John, is an international Portuguese rider, needless to say he is Portugese. We lived in Portugal where my husband rode for a Lusitano breeder, selling horses to Spain, France and Germany. He also has a family farm just outside Lisbon where we still have a few Lusitano mares breeding. He also played internationally in a game called Horseball, which is just starting up in Tamworth here in Australia for the first time. They are really doing a fantastic job down there. It is a very big game in Europe and is extremely exciting to watch, we hope that we can also help get this sport going in Australia and hopefully Mackay will be able to get a team together to compete against the guys from down south soon.

We have only been in Australia just over a year and we are trying to get our centre up and running. Thankfully we have been very busy since we started.  I myself have always had and ridden thoroughbreds. Born and raised in Zimbabwe.  I successfully competed for many years in Showjumping. We hope to get more people interested in and riding Thouroughbreds. It is shocking how many horses come off the track and have nowhere to go. There are so many good horses that just need re-educating and hopefully if we can get some reschooled we can get them good homes. We have found that a lot of people here in Mackay have a very negative look at thoroughbreds for riding and hopefully we can help change that a little and get more people riding and competeing on TB's.

We would really like to help boost the riding and competing scene here in Mackay and we hope that our centre will help get more people into riding. We aim to have one place where everyone in Mackay can get together and enjoy all things horsey! Whether you are a dressage rider, showjumper, pleasure rider, camp drafter, reiner etc. Somewhere where all Equine lovers can enjoy each others company and hopefully learn from each other.
