Exell continues his domination in Aachen
World Driving Champion Boyd Exell of Australia has continued his supremacy by claiming his third consecutive CAIO, World Equestrian Festival title for Driving in Aachen, Germany over the weekend.
Exell has now won the title four times in his career, first in 2003 and then 2009, 2010 and 2011. The Aussie champion has been untouchable in the sport of Driving in recent years. Exell was crowned World Champion at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky last year, becoming the first Australian to win a gold medal at any World Equestrian Games. Exell is also the current FEI World Cup Champion, a title he won in April for the third consecutive time.
Exell admitted that a trifecta in Aachen was an achievement worth celebrating.
“To win once in Aachen is significant, but to win three in a row, it’s pretty amazing,” said Exell, who was still coming to terms with the win.
“My dressage was good, but could have been better. Just one day of preparation was not enough for me.
“I was happy that I was able to increase the gap after dressage and cones and that I have been able to equal the performance of IJsbrand Chardon, who also won Aachen three times consecutively.
“I am extremely pleased with my horses. They did very well in all competitions and were well received by the judges. This team certainly offers opportunities for next year’s Championship in Riesenbeck, Germany,” said Exell referring to the 2012 World Four-in-Hand Driving Championships.
Exell is considering what his next event will be, however, the 39 year-old who resides in England is excited to be heading home to Australia in November for EQUITANA, which will be held at Sydney Showgrounds from 10-13 November 2011.
