Australia’s Olympic Games Eventing hopefuls get their chance in front of selectors

With less than 100 days to go to the start of Equestrian competition at the London Olympic Games, Australia’s Eventers aiming to make the team will this weekend get a chance to shine in front of selectors.

Top Australian based eventers will this weekend compete at the Sydney CCI3* (International 3DE - three day event)

in what will be one of the last opportunities for combinations to impress selectors ahead of when the team is announced on 18 June.

There are just five positions up for grabs on the highly coveted Australian Eventing Team that will compete in London.

Australia has traditionally enjoyed great success in Eventing at the Olympic Games, with a total medal haul of six gold, three silver and two bronze. The team which travels to London will be looking to improve upon the silver medal which it won at Beijing in 2008.

Shane Rose, Sonja Johnson and Megan Jones were part of that silver medal winning team in 2008 and are eager to make back to back teams and earn a chance to go for Gold in 2012. The trio are among Australia’s most experienced eventers are sure to perform well this weekend.

Rose and his ride Taurus are in fine form having recently won Kihikihi CIC3* (NZ) and Albury CIC3*.

For young Olympic hopefuls Emma Mason and Natalie Blundell who are aiming to make their first Australian team, this three day event is arguably the biggest of their career.

Another member of Equestrian Australia’s shadow Olympic Eventing team and one to watch is the event’s reigning title holder Christine Bates. The 36 year old mother to five year old William is also looking to make her first Australian team.

Craig Barrett, winner of the 2011 Melbourne CCI3*, is also looking to make his first Olympic Games team.

Having won the Adelaide CCI4* in November 2011 riding Panamera, Australian gold medallist Stuart Tinney, who was a member of the Eventing team which won gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, will compete on his second horse Pluto Mio.

The CCI3* Sydney International 3DE will be staged at SIEC – Sydney International Equestrian Centre – home of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

The venue is located 45km west of Sydney at Saxony Road, Horsley Park.
